WESTMINSTER, Md. - Three freshmen and a sophomore helped Goucher finish in third place in the team scoring of the 3,000-meter race at today's McDaniel Cross County Challenge.
Freshmen Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and Adam Scipione (Walpole, MA/Walpole) were the first two runners from Goucher to cross the finish line. Rooney completed the race in 10:05, good for fifth place in the field of 48 competitors, and Scipione wound up in ninth place (10:19).
Goucher had two other entrants in the race: sophmore Sean Mack (Albany, NY/Albany) placed 11th (10:27) and freshman Brendan Ference (Smallwood, NY/Monticello) 14th (10:33).
Sean Allen from McDaniel won the race (9:56), helping the Green Terror place first in the team scoring with 21 points. York was second with 28 points, followed by Goucher (39) in third, Sheanandoah (64) in fourth, Montgomery (83) in fifth and Hood (93) in sixth.
Goucher entered only two runners in a 5,000-meter race: Matt Spitznagel (Parkton, MD/Friends School of Baltimore) placed 16th in a field of 45 runners with a time of 18:02 and Zach Martin (Victor, NY/Victor Central) was 21st (18:22). That prevented Goucher from being awarded a team score in the longer of the two races.
Allen also won the 5K, which he completed in 16:52.
