YORK, Pa. - While Goucher's top five runners essentially produced the team score head coach John Caslin's squad achieved at today's York Invitational, it was the sixth runner that allowed the Gophers to beat out Catholic by a point for second place.
Sean Mack (Albany, NY/Albany) managed to pass two Catholic runners during the final 800 meters of the 8,000-meter race. The displacement added two points to Catholic's final total of 61, allowing Goucher, which accumulated 60 points, to hang on to the runner-up spot. York, with three runners among the top seven finishers, captured the team title with 36 points.
Zach Martin (Victor, NY/Victor Central) was Goucher's top performer as he crossed the finish line in 29:11.26, good for sixth place. For spots behind Martin in 10th place was Matt Spitznagel (Parkton, MD/Friends School of Baltimore), who completed the race in 29:47.38.
Runners from York finished 1-2: Jesse Jaeger won the race in a time of 28:19.15 and Luke Fernandez was runner-up (28:24.11).
Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) placed 13th overall with his time of 30:15.31, while Brendan Ference (Smallwood, NY/Monticello) and Adam Scipione (Walpole, MA/Walpole) were 15th and 16th, respectively. Ference posted a time of 30:20.53 and Scipione was clocked at 30:32.65.
