TOWSON, Md. - Goucher finished ahead of Catholic, Moravian and Drew in fifth place today at the inaugural Landmark Conference Cross Country Championships.
The top two performers for the Gophers were sophomore Zach Martin (Victor, NY/Victor Central) in 18th place and junior Matt Spitznagel (Parkton, MD/Friends School of Baltimore) in 19th. Martin completed the 8,000-meter race in 29:27, :21 ahead of Spitznagel.
The next runners from Goucher to cross the finish line were freshmen Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), Brendan Ference (Smallwood, NY/Monticello) and Adam Scipione (Walpole, MA/Walpole). Rooney was clocked at 30:07, good for 24th place, while Ference (30:27) and Scipione (30:46) followed in 30th and 34th places, respectively.
A total of 69 runners competed in the race. The individual champion was Susquehanna's Paul Thistle, who set a new record on Goucher's rain-soaked course with his time of 27:37. Thistle finished :20 ahead of the runner-up, Chris Wasnetsky from Scranton.
Susquehanna also captured the team title with a team score of 52 points. One point back in second place with 53 points was Juniata. U.S. Merchant Marine (95 points) was third, Scranton (111) fourth, Goucher (125) fifth, Catholic (134) sixth, Moravian (140) seventh and Drew (255) eighth.
