Goucher's Representatives: Three Runners, One Swimmer

MADISON, N.J. — The Landmark Conference today announced the names of the 32 student-athletes who make up the 2011 Winter Landmark All-Academic Team, which recognizes two male and two female athletes who have excelled athletically and academically from each of the eight Landmark institutions.

Goucher's four representatives on the fourth annual Winter Landmark All-Academic Team are Caitlin Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) and Hadley Couraud (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) from the women's indoor track and field team, Adam Scipione (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) from the men's indoor track and field team and Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) from the men's swimming team.

Each school selected its four nominees, all of whom had to compete in any of the six sports for which the Landmark Conference conducts a championship in the winter. In addition, the nominees had to be a sophomore, junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Biggers, a junior history major with a 3.08 cumulative grade point average, was part of Goucher's entry that placed fourth and broke the indoor school record with its time of 13:33.40 in the distance medley relay at the 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. She also ran in the 4 x 400-meter relay where the Gophers were clocked at 4:32.6 and took third place, and in the 4 x 200-meter relay where they were fourth (1:58.38). She also represented Goucher on the Winter 2010 Landmark All-Academic Team.

Couraud, who holds the indoor school record in the mile, ran in three relays in which the Gophers scored points at the 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. She was part of Goucher's entries in the distance medley and 4 x 400-meter relays along with Biggers, plus she also competed in the 4 x 800-meter relay (10:32.82) that took fourth place. She is a sophomore biology major with a 3.77 cumulative GPA through her first three semesters.

Scipione, who was named the Senior Scholar-Athlete for the sport of men's cross country by the Landmark Conference in the fall and is majoring in philosophy and business management, ran the opening 1,200-meter leg on Goucher's entry in the distance medley relay that finished in first place and set a new indoor school record with its time of 10:53.24 at the 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. He also ran in the 4 x 400-meter relay where the Gophers took fourth place (3:43.66). He is carrying a 3.73 cumulative GPA and previously appeared on both the Fall 2010 and Winter 2010 Landmark All-Academic Teams.

Williams is on the Winter Landmark All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year, making it this time after setting a new school record and finishing as the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle at the 2011 Landmark Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. He completed the event in 4:47.92 and also recorded the fastest times in the history of Goucher's men's swimming program in both backstroke events during the three-day meet. The junior chemistry major is carrying a 3.56 cumulative GPA.
