TOWSON, Md. — Goucher produced both the male and the female tennis players selected Players of the Week in the Landmark Conference for the seven-day period which ended October 13.
David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) was named the week's top performer among the conference's men's tennis players after picking up one of the three victories in singles play the Gophers needed to down Penn State-Harrisburg, 5-4. The senior defeated Ben Leibig 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.
Spivey and his playing partner at No. 1 doubles were alco victorious in the match against the Nittany Lions. With their 8-1 triumph over Johnny Xue and Vincent Lepore III, Spivey and Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) raised their record in dual matches this season to 3-0.
The honor of Women's Tennis Player of the Week went to junior Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton), who went 2-0 in singles play. She earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alejandra Portillo of Penn State-Harrisburg at No. 3 when the Gophers defeated the Nittany Lions, 8-1, and disposed of Waynesburg's Madison DuBrock 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 when the Yellow Jackets pinned a 5-4 setback on head coach Sally Baum's squad.
Ruff, playing both times at No. 2 with Alice Goldstein-Plesser
(Durham, N.C./Durham School of the
Arts), split the two doubles
matches she played in during the week. The win an 8-2 victory over
Portillo and Laura Lin from Penn State-Harrisburg.
