Gophers Take Four Firsts at Blue Jay Tune-Up, Martin Sets Men's Triple Jump Record

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Goucher College track and field teams took four first place finishes and set one school record as they competed at the Blue Jay Tune-Up hosted by Elizabethtown College on Saturday.

For the men, Mark Martin took first in both the triple jump (13.44 meters) and the long jump (6.35 meters).  Martin's triple jump mark established a program record, besting the previous record of 12.93 meters set by Devon Esslinger in 2019.  The triple jump mark is currently No. 3 in the Landmark Conference.

Carter Hinton-Ayodele (Bowie, Md./Bowie) took first in the women's triple jump with a jump of 10.82 meters.  Jaelan Gabriel (Houston, Texas/Dulles) was third with a jump of 10.69 meters.

Tahira Bakare (Silver Spring, Md./Archbishop Carroll) placed first in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 13.23 seconds.

First years Joshua Stevenson (Hyattsville, Md./Parkdale) and Deonte Lewis (Fort Washington, Md./Crossland) both qualified for the men's 100 meter dash final.  Stevenson placed third at 11.35 seconds, while Lewis was fifth at 11.45 seconds.  Lewis placed eighth in the men's 200, clocking a time of 23.27 seconds.

Sean Whitfield (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) finished 10th in the men's 800 with a time of 2:00.81.

The Gopher men also placed fourth in a pair of relays.  The quartet of Stevenson, Whitfield Lewis and Martin ran a time of 45.57 seconds in the 4x100, while in the 4x400 they ran a time of 3:32.63.

In the women's high jump Dorian Cheney (Bryans Road, Md./North Point) was sixth, coming in at 1.40 meters.

Sarah Roth (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) had a toss of 9.64 meters to take sixth in the women's shot put.  Lydia Bailey (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) took sixth in the women's javelin with a 26.09 meter throw, while Ava Cox (Elkton, Md./Elkton) was eighth in the women's discus with a throw of 25.90 meters.

The Gophers are back in action Saturday and Sunday when they compete in the 2023 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Moravian.
