Thornton-Fillyaw Caps Sophomore Campaign With Third at Nationals
Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw finished third in the women's 800 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday evening.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw of the Goucher College women's outdoor track and field team capped an outstanding sophomore campaign by finishing third in the women's 800 meter final at the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday evening at Doug Shaw Stadium. In a race that was delayed more than three hours due to weather, Thornton-Fillyaw again lowered her school and Landmark Conference records in the event, finishing at 2:08.25.
With her finish, Thornton-Fillyaw earned USTFCCCA All-America honors for the second time this season. She placed fifth in the 800 at NCAA indoor nationals to earn First Team All-America as well.
In Saturday's race, Thornton-Fillyaw, who had the fastest time in Friday's preliminaries (2:08.35), hung with defending 800 outdoor champion Emma Kelley of Washington University-St. Louis before Kelley started to pull away. After the opening 400, Thornton-Fillyaw found herself fourth and battling with Kelley's WashU teammate Danielle Schultz and Megan Bell of the University of Rochester, running an opening 1:02.91.
Down the stretch, Thornton-Fillyaw was able to get past Bell and was chasing down Schultz before getting edged by 0.002 seconds, with Schultz running 2:08.244 to Thornton-Fillyaw's 2:08.246. Thornton-Fillyaw had the fastest final 400 in the field, running a second lap of 1:05.34, slightly faster than Kelley's 1:05.37. Kelley took first with a time of 2:06.02.
Thornton-Fillyaw is the first track and field All-American, male or female, in Goucher program history.
