Gophers Suffer 60-50 Setback to Cavaliers

TOWSON, MD — Shadae Swan (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) provided Goucher with at least 10 points for the 45th consecutive game tonight, but her efforts could not prevent the Gophers from suffering a 60-50 loss to Cabrini.

Swan, Division III's 15th-leading scorer in the nation as of Feb. 11 when she was averaging 20.7 points per contest, tallied 14 against the Cavaliers, sharing scoring honors with Cabrini's Kayleen Smith. Amber Smith (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) supplied the Gophers (4-18) with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Goucher scored the first five points of the contest, keeping the Cavaliers (18-7) off the scoreboard for more than five minutes until Katie Finfrock landed a three-point field goal. Neither team led by more than five points until a lay-up by Deana DiAmico provided Cabrini with a 29-22 advantage with :13 remaining before halftime.

Swan nailed a baseline jumper just as the horn was sounding to end the first half, making the score 29-24 at the break.

Goucher closed to within 34-32 on a free throw by Freddie Newman-Blount (Lanham, MD/Bishop Ireton) 3:09 into the second half, but the Cavaliers responded with a 15-4 run to open up a 49-36 advantage midway through the period.

Goucher is locked into being the No. 7 seed in next week's Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament, but the Gophers' opponent in the opening round — either Marymount or York — won't be officially determined until Saturday.
