ARLINGTON, VA — Goucher was bounced from the Capital
Athletic Conference championship tournament in the opening round
for the ninth time in the past 10 years when the Gophers suffered
an 80-54 loss this evening to second-seeded Marymount.
At the outset, the Gophers showed every intention of staying with
the Saints (17-9). Goucher's first possession produced a
three-point basket by Maura Fair (West Chester,
PA/Henderson).
The Gophers (4-20) twice stretched their lead to six points in the
opening moments of the contest before the Saints went on an 11-2
run to assume a 15-12 advantage midway through the first half.
Goucher went ahead for a final time on a three-pointer by Fair that
made the score 17-15 with 9:48 remaining before halftime, but from
that point though the end of the period, the Saints outscored the
Gophers, 30-2, to pull ahead by 28 points at the break.
The entire second half, Marymount's lead fluctuated between 24 and
37 points.
Goucher's Shadae Swan (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances
Academy) led all scorers as she tallied 23 points in the
loss. Fair supplied the Gophers with 15 points.
Kathleen Brown achieved a double-double of 19 points and 14
rebounds for Marymount, which advances to face York in the CAC
semifinals. The Spartans defeated St. Mary's, 74-53, in one of this
evening's other first-round contests.
