KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Shadae Swan (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) was held to a season-low 11 points today as Goucher suffered a 78-55 Landmark Conference loss to Merchant Marine.
Swan, the third-leading Division III scorer in the nation who was averaging 23.4 points per contest, had her streak of at least 20 points stopped at eight games. Still alive is the senior's string of consecutive double-digit scoring performances, now at 66 games dating back to the 2004-05 season.
Swan hit two of her first three shots from the field for her only four points of the first half as the two teams were knotted up at 6-6 a little over four minutes into the contest. The Gophers (7-12, 2-7 Landmark) were still down only 24-18 when Francheska Guilfu (Bridgeport, CT/Preston) knocked down a three-point basket with 6:55 remaining before halftime, but the Mariners (12-8, 4-5 Landmark) finished the period with a 17-6 run to expand their lead to 41-24 at the break.
Merchant Marine's lead fluctuated between 15 and 25 points the entire second half.
Morgan Gartner was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Mariners as she finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
For Goucher, which dropped its sixth game in a row since a 64-56 victory over Drew back on Jan. 12, Amber Smith (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) tallied 13 points and Guilfu matched Swan's 11-point effort.
