TOWSON, Md. - Shadae Swan (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) poured in 26 points tonight to lead Goucher to a 66-50 triumph over Hood, the Gophers' first victory over the Blazers in 20 years.
The Blazers (0-4) led by as many as five points before Goucher went ahead for the first time on a lay-up by Swan with 4:26 remaining in the first half that made the score 23-22. The Gophers (2-2) enjoyed a two-point advantage at the break, 29-27.
Swan, who has scored in double figures in 51 consecutive games, nailed a shot from three-point range 4:44 into the second half to put Goucher ahead 40-33, and the rest of the way the Gophers' lead fluctuated between seven and 16 points.
Amber Smith (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and Francheska Guilfu (Bridgeport, CT/Preston) contributed a combined 27 points to the win. Smith was 7-for-10 from the field as she knocked down 14 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Guilfu delivered 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.
For Hood, Jen Willison posted team-leading totals of 20 points and nine rebounds.
Goucher had not defeated Hood in the sport of women's basketball since the Gophers opened the 1987-88 season with a 73-46 win over the Blazers.
