KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Goucher made only one of its first 17
shots from the field this evening and wound up suffering a 90-59
loss to Gwynedd-Mercy at The Milkhouse at Disney's Wide World of
Sports.
With the loss, head coach Didi Cotton's Gophers finished in third place in their bracket at the ECAC Holiday Festival.
After spotting the Griffins (7-3) the first six points of the contest, the Gophers got on the scoreboard for the first time on a three-point basket by Leia Roberts-Brown (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll) after 2:19 had been played. Another 8:24 would run off the clock before Goucher would score again from the field, this time on a short jumper by Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) that made the score 19-9 in favor of Gwynedd-Mercy.
The Gophers (4-6) were 7-for-32 from the field (.219) in the first half, which ended with the Griffins on top, 39-22.
Goucher's shooting percentage shot up to .345 (10-for-29) in the second half, but the Gophers were never able to reduce their deficit below 12 points at any time. Gwynedd-Mercy, on the other hand, was 20-for-37 (.541) from the field during the final 20:00.
Lauren Rosar of the Griffins produced game-high totals of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Kristy Cramp, who finished with 11 points, five assists, three rebounds on one blocked shot, was chosen as the bracket's most valuable player.
For Goucher, two starters and two reserves reached double figures in points: Roberts-Brown and Doughty, who were both in the starting line-up, supplied the Gophers with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Tai Young (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) delivered 16 points off the bench and Amy Smith (Logan Twp., N.J./Paulsboro) entered the game and made four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.
This was the first meeting between the Gophers and Griffins in the sport of women's basketball since the 1990-91 season.
