Royals Able to Coast After Pair of 9-0 Runs
Myette, Smith Finish with 10 Points in 63-47 Setback
January 16, 2009
TOWSON, Md. – Except for giving up a couple of runs of nine
unanswered points, Goucher basically held its own against Scranton
in the Sports & Recreation Center this evening.
Only six points separated the two teams before the Royals tallied the final seven points of the first half to open up a 34-21 advantage and also the first two points of the second half.
The second 9-0 run began with the Gophers seemingly still within striking distance, trailing 51-40 with nearly nine minutes left to play. But after the Royals stretched their lead to 60-40 on a lay-up by Sidney Jaques with 5:50 remaining, they were able to coast the rest of the way and earn a 63-47 Landmark Conference victory over head coach Didi Cotton's squad.
Goucher went more than four minutes without a single point at the outset, finally getting on the scoreboard thanks to a lay-up by Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kans./American Hebrew Academy). After falling behind by as many as 10 points, the Gophers (5-8, 1-3 Landmark) were able to knock their deficit down to 19-15 on a free throw by Tai Young (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) with 6:51 remaining in the first half.
After Courtney Roselle's basket 1:18 into the second half provided the Royals (10-4, 3-1 Landmark) with a 36-21 advantage, the Gophers went on a 7-0 run of their own that started with a three-point field goal by Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) and lay-ups by Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and von Ende. But eight points would be as close as they would get at any point during the final 20:00.
There were two double-figures scorers among Goucher's five starters and none among the five Scranton players who started the game. Smith and Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) shared scoring honors for the Gophers by knocking down 10 points apiece. Jennifer King came off the bench to furnish Scranton a game-high 16 points.
