TOWSON, Md. – Goucher couldn't duplicate its 10-for-25
shooting performance during the opening 20:00 of tonight's Landmark
Conference game against Merchant Marine that produced a one-point
lead at the break. In the second half, the Gophers were just
7-for-31 from the field (.226) and allowed the Mariners to emerge
with a 60-52 victory.
Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) provided the Gophers (5-12, 1-8 Landmark) with their first lead of the game when she made a lay-up with :36 remaining in the first half.
The basket that put Goucher ahead 30-29 was von Ende's only
field goal of the opening period, but the freshman guard/forward
accounted for 14 of Goucher's 22 points in the second half and
wound up with a game-high 17 points.
The Mariners (10-9, 4-5 Landmark) didn't wrest the lead from the
Gophers in the second half until a basket by Stephanie Waller put
them ahead 39-38 with 12:21 left to play. They matched their
biggest advantage of the first half on a field goal by Rebecca
Grimes that made the score 52-42 with 5:37 remaining.
Two of von Ende's teammates also turned in double-digit scoring performances: Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) supplied the Gophers with 11 points and Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The leading scorer for Merchant Marine was May Marie Hayes with 16 points.
