TOWSON, Md. – Goucher's one and only lead in tonight's Landmark Conference game against Susquehanna was the result of a free throw by Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) just :57 into the contest.
In fact, the Gophers scored more points at the free-throw line in the first half than they could muster from their 4-for-25 performance (.160) from the field. Their shooting did pick up some in the second half (.294), but never enough for them to get back in a game they went on to lose, 71-54.
Goucher, which could dress only seven players for the game, didn't have one with more than one field goal until Smith got a 10-foot jumper to drop 1:36 into the second half. Although the junior forward was only 4-for-20 from the field in the game, she made 10 of her 16 free-throw attempts to finish with a game-high 18 points.
Smith also grabbed 12 rebounds, giving her a double-double for the third game in a row and the ninth time in 2008-09. She remains the leading rebounder in the Landmark Conference at 9.4 per contest.
The Crusaders (13-8, 5-5 Landmark), who led 30-18 at the end of the first half, had two double-digit scorers. Libby Shober had 14 points to go along with 13 rebounds and Jessica Zigarelli chipped in with 12 points.
