TOWSON, Md. – Goucher never fully recovered after spotting
Juniata the first 15 points of the game and came up short against
the Eagles, 74-57, in Landmark Conference action this afternoon.
Before the Gophers (5-15, 1-10 Landmark) got on the scoreboard for the first time thanks to a free throw by Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) after 5:11 had elapsed, they were 0-for-9 from the field and had turned the ball over four times. The Eagles (12-10, 6-5 Landmark) were able to expand their lead to 19-1 before Smith provided Goucher with its first field goal of the contest, a lay-up with 13:24 remaining before halftime.
The Gophers knocked their deficit below double digits on two separate occasions in the first half, but by the break, it was back at 15 points, 40-25.
The closest Goucher was able to get to the Eagles in the second half was on a three-point play by Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) with 9:52 left to play. Myette's lay-up made the score 53-47 and her free throw that followed sliced Juniata's lead down to five points.
Smith supplied the Gophers with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double and 10th of the season. Myette and Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The leading scorer for Juniata was Brittany Ryder with 17 points.
