February 19, 2009
TOWSON, Md. – Freshmen were the top two scorers for Goucher
this evening in an 81-66 loss to McDaniel in the Sports &
Recreation Center.
In fact, the six first-year players who dressed for the Gophers (5-18) combined to score a total of 48 points in the non-conference contest. Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) led the way with a 17-point performance and Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) added 13 points.
von Ende didn't score her first point of the game until she nailed a three-point attempt, putting Goucher ahead 13-11 after more than seven minutes had been played. But the Gophers didn't score again from the field for a period of 5:47 until Leia Roberts-Brown (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll) made a lay-up, but by that time, the Green Terror (14-10) had pulled ahead 23-16.
The Gophers closed to within 28-27 on a pair of free throws by Myette with 2:02 remaining before halftime, but by the time the break rolled around, the Green Terror had built its lead back up to 38-32.
von Ende's three-pointer on the Gophers' first possession of the second half reduced McDaniel's lead to 38-35, but Goucher would get no closer.
Ali Moreland and Kim Staub shared scoring honors for the Green Terror with 18 points apiece.
It was the first game between the intra-state rivals since the 1995-96 season.
