TOWSON, Md. – It was a decent start for Goucher, even if
less than two minutes had run off the clock. The Gophers connected
on two of their first three shots and trailed Catholic by only a
point, 6-5.
But it was mostly all downhill from there.
The Cardinals reeled off 14 unanswered points, opening up a 20-5 lead on a free throw by Jenn Canale with 13:10 remaining before halftime, and the Gophers wound up shooting just 26.1 percent from the field. By the time the final horn sounded, Catholic had secured a 78-49 Landmark Conference victory over head coach Didi Cotton's squad.
The closest the Gophers (3-3, 0-1 Landmark) would get after Catholic's 14-0 run was when Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) landed a three-point field goal with 11:46 left to play in the first half to make the score 23-11. But the Cardinals (6-2, 1-0 Landmark) responded with the next eight points of the contest, taking their first 20-point advantage on a lay-up by Brianna Peterson with 8:26 showing on the clock.
Catholic led 41-25 at the break and by as many as 32 points in the second half.
Peterson led all scorers, going 11-for-14 from the field during a 22-point performance.
Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kans./American Hebrew Academy) captured scoring honors for Goucher as she finished with 14 points. Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) was credited with a game-high 11 rebounds.
