Senior Forward Tallies 15 Points in 69-42 Home Loss to Eagles
TOWSON, Md. — Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) became only the third player in the history of Goucher's women's basketball program to surpass 700 rebounds in her career, but there was little else for the Gophers or their fans to celebrate this evening because the senior forward achieved her milestone in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center during a 69-42 Landmark Conference setback to Juniata.
The Gophers (4-9, 0-3 Landmark) were trailing 26-4 when Smith collected her 700th rebound by latching on to a missed three-point attempt by Juniata's Ashton Bankos. The only two female players in school history with more rebounds are Kate Guggino (2001-04) with 845 and Jen Kammueller (1998-91) with 839.
The Eagles (8-6, 2-1 Landmark) broke the SRC record for most three-point field goals attempted by one team in a game. They were 10-of-30 from three-point range; the former record of 27 three-point attempts was established by Mary Washington back on February 12, 1996.
Juniata, which was 17-for-32 from the field (.531), led 46-16 at the end of the first half. During the second half, the Gophers could get no closer than 50-29 on a free throw by Smith with 13:35 remaining.
In addition to her game-high eight rebounds, Smith led all scorers with 15 points. The leading scorer for Juniata was Bankos with 12 points.
