Smith, Mitchell Combine for 21 Points, 18 Rebounds in Setback
YORK, Pa. — Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), who ranked first in rebounds and third in scoring in the Landmark Conference last season, supplied Goucher with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds this afternoon, but that wasn't enough to prevent the Gophers from bowing to York, 60-41, in the opening contest of the 2009-10 campaign for both teams.
The Spartans (1-0) went ahead for good on a three-point basket by Cinthia Ruiz midway through the first half that made the score 15-14. The Gophers still trailed by just a point (22-21) with 6:35 remaining before halftime, but were outscored 9-2 over the remainder of the period and left the court at the break behind 31-23.
After shooting nearly 42 percent from the field (10-for-24) in
the first half, the Gophers (0-1) made only six of the 32 field
goals they attempted (.188) during final 20:00. York’s lead
never dipped below five points at any point following halftime.
Goucher had a second double-digit scorer in freshman Victoria Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College), who had eight rebounds to go along with her 10 points.
April Sparkman captured scoring honors for York by knocking down 15 points.
The Gophers out-rebounded the Spartans, 49-39, but were 0-for-7 on three-point attempts.
