Smith, von Ende Tally 13 Points Apiece in 68-44 Setback
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Just as it was two seasons ago in the inaugural meeting between the two teams, Goucher was a long way from home when it took on Keene St. today at the Grand Canyon Classic. The Owls, who defeated the Gophers, 55-49, in the championship game of the 2008 Purple & Gold Poet Classic in Whittier, Calif., were victorious over head coach Didi Cotton's squad once again, 68-44.
By halftime, two Keene St. players were already in double figures in points and the Owls (6-2) were ahead 41-20. Kristin Degou, who finished with a game-high 20 points, scored 12 of them in the first half as she was 5-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-6 from three-point range. Meghan Farrell tallied all 11 of her points in the opening 20:00.
The closest the Gophers (4-6) managed to get in the second half was when Shante Atkinson (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) converted a free throw with 5:27 left to play to make the score 56-39.
Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) shared scoring honors for Goucher with 13 points apiece.
Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico), who was available to the Gophers for the first time in 2009-10, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as Goucher finished with a 47-45 advantage on the boards.
