Bearcats Pull Away in Second Half for 73-49 Victory

Smith Supplies Gophers with 18 Points, Makes All-Tournament Team


PHOENIX, Ariz. — Despite an 18-point, 10-rebound performance by Amber Smith (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), Goucher was beaten by Baruch, 73-49, today at the Grand Canyon Classic.

Smith's 10th point of the contest was a free throw that completed a conventional three-point play and allowed the Gophers to tie the score at 17-17 midway through the first half. By the end of the period, however, the Bearcats (7-3) managed to open up a 39-30 lead.

In the second half, the Gophers (4-7) were 6-for-31 (.194) from the field, including 0-for-10 on three-point attempts. Baruch's lead surpassed 20 points for the first time on a basket by Anika Sierk that made the score 58-37 with 10:53 left to play and reached its pinnacle of 73-46 on a jumper by Margaret Elenis with 1:18 remaining.

Kalea Davis and Megan Bouwens shared scoring honors for the Bearcats with 18 points apiece.

Smith, who is averaging 12.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, was named to the all-tournament team as Goucher's only representative.
