Freshman Guard Knocks Down Game-High 17 Points
SCRANTON, Pa. — Goucher's Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) finished with a game-high 17 points, but none of the freshman guard's teammates was able to produce more than six points as the Gophers were saddled with a painful 91-38 loss by Scranton in Landmark Conference action this evening.
The Gophers stayed within six points of the Royals (15-5, 9-1 Landmark) until Sidney Jaques and Jennifer King connected on shots from behind the 3-point stripe on back-to-back possessions, making the score 25-13 with 7:14 remaining in the first half. A made 3-pointer by Alison Sweeney with 2:57 left to play before halftime provided Scranton with its first 20-point advantage (40-20).
Sweeney tallied 16 points in the first half, which ended with the Royals on top 47-20. She played only six minutes in the second period and didn't add to her point total.
Huff, who furnished the Gophers (2-17, 2-8 Landmark) with 12 points in the opening 20 minutes, knocked down a 3-pointer on her team's first possession of the second half. After that, a jumper by Leia Roberts-Brown (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll) accounted for the only two points Goucher was able to score over the next 7:41.
Prior to this evening, the Gophers had not lost a game by as many as 53 points since they bowed to Mary Washington by the identical score of 91-38 on January 17, 2007.
The Royals, who occupy first place in the Landmark Conference, a game ahead of both Juniata and Moravian, were 33-for-63 from the field (.524), including 14-for-30 on 3-point attempts (.467).
