Gophers Take Down Mariners for Second Time in 2010-11
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher snapped a seven-game losing streak this evening by knocking off the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 56-44, the Gophers' first victory since they defeated the Mariners, 69-59, back on Jan. 15.

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher snapped a seven-game losing streak this evening by knocking off the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 56-44, the Gophers' first victory since they defeated the Mariners, 69-59, back on Jan. 15.
The win, which allowed the Gophers to take over sole possession of sixth place in the Landmark Conference, was Goucher's first in nine games in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center this season.
The Gophers (3-18, 3-9 Landmark) never trailed and opened up leads as big as 16 points during the first half. The Mariners (6-16, 0-12 Landmark) trailed 30-20 at the break and closed to within 35-28 on a layup by Janay Weathers 3:34 into the second period before head coach Didi Cotton's squad went on a 17-4 run over a span of 7:42 to go up 52-32.
Goucher's Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) scored in double figures for the Gophers for the sixth straight game and 12th overall in 2010-11 as she knocked down 17 points. Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) and Precious Kollock (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) added 10 points apiece.
Merchant Marine's Rebecca Grimes finished with a team-high 14 points, leaving the senior guard two away from 1,000 points for her career. Weather ended up with a double-double of 11 points and 17 rebounds, which is the most rebounds an opposing players has managed against Goucher this season.
von Ende and Leia Roberts-Brown (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll) both grabbed seven rebounds for Goucher. von Ende was also credited with a team-leading six assists and three steals in the victory.
