Doughty Leads All Scorers, Supplies Gophers with 14 Points
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher knocked what had been as much as a 20-point deficit early in the second half down to as few as eight points with more than four minutes remaining before York contained the rally. Down the stretch, the Spartans made five free throws and one 3-point field goal as they went on to earn a 60-47 victory in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center this evening.
The Gophers (0-2) never led in the contest and managed to score only two points on their first 10 possessions. Their 11th possession ended with Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) connecting on a 3-point attempt, trimming York's lead to 12-5 with 13:50 remaining in the first half.
The Spartans (2-0) responded to Doughty's trey by going on a 10-0 run, which put them up 22-5, and by the end of the period, they enjoyed a seemingly comfortable 35-17 advantage.
Goucher's second-half comeback was the result of a vastly superior shooting performance. In the opening 20 minutes, the Gophers were just 6-for-32 from the field (.188), but they improved to 13-for-29 (.448) during the final period.
Midway through the second half, York still enjoyed a 52-33 lead, but that's when the Gophers went on an 11-0 run that featured a pair of layups by Doughty, a layup and a jumper by Elizabeth von Ende (Leawood, Kan./American Hebrew Academy) and a basket by Taquasia Lambert (Brooklyn, N.Y./Patapsco). The Spartans went 5:59 without a point before Brittany Hicks sank a pair of free throws, putting York up 54-44 with 3:11 left to play.
Doughty led all scorers as she supplied the Gophers with 14 points. Goucher's only other double-digit scorer was Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie), who delivered 11 points off the bench.
Hicks and Jamie Sapp shared scoring honors for York with 12 points apiece.
