Shorewomen Pin 68-55 Setback on Gophers

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher trailed by as many as 25 points on the way to a 68-55 loss to Washington (Md.) this evening in the first head-to-head meeting between the two in-state rivals in the sport of women's basketball since the 2002-03 season.
Three players accounted for all 24 points the Shorewomen (2-2) scored in the opening 12:03 of the contest. By the time Kristen Hansen nailed a 3-point basket to put Washington up 27-16 with 4:59 remaining before halftime, Latisha Pledger, Erin Kile and Erin Fitzgerald all had eight points to their credit.
By comparison, the Gophers (0-3) didn't have anybody with as many as eight points until Leia Roberts-Brown (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll) made a shot 5:29 into the second half.
Washington outscored Goucher, 14-2, to open the second half, turning a 36-23 lead at halftime into a commanding 50-25 advantage. The Gophers were still down by 23 points before they went on a 12-2 run over the final 4:10.
Pledger, Kile and Fitzgerald finished a combined 16-for-27 from the field and contributed a total of 41 points to the victory. Pledger had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with her 14 points and Kile also achieved a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards.
The leading scorer for Goucher was Roberts-Brown with 13 points. Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) supplied the Gophers with 12 points for her third double-digit scoring performance in as many games this season.
Since downing Washington, 66-60, back on Jan. 11, 2003, the Gophers have lost all seven games in which they've faced an opponent from the Centennial Conference.
