Slow Start Hampers Gophers in Quest for First Win

By the time freshman forward senior guard Taquasia Lambert (Brooklyn, N.Y./Patapsco) produced the Gophers' first two points by knocking down a short-range jumper, the Cardinals had already opened up a 9-0 advantage and were on their way to a 67-46 victory.

By the time freshman forward senior guard Taquasia Lambert (Brooklyn, N.Y./Patapsco) produced the Gophers' first two points by knocking down a short-range jumper, the Cardinals had already opened up a 9-0 advantage and were on their way to a 67-46 victory.
On Catholic's first possession following Lambert's basket, Emily Grabiak nailed a shot from 3-point range and the Cardinals had their first double-figure lead. At the end of the first half, the two teams were separated by 17 points as the Gophers trailed 40-23.
Catholic's lead fluctuated between 14 and 31 points throughout the second half.
Each team had just one double-digit scorer. For the Gophers (0-5, 0-1 Landmark), it was Leia Roberts-Brown (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll), who was 5-for-10 from the field and finished with 11 points; for the Cardinals (4-1, 1-0 Landmark), it was Jill Woerner, who ended up with 17 points.
Woerner and Katarina Owunna both contributed nine rebounds to Catholic's total of 49. The Gophers had eight fewer rebounds than the Cardinals, even though freshman forward Hannah Brown (Pinedale, Wyo./Dunn School) had 13 to her credit.
The Gophers committed a season-high 27 turnovers.
