Double-Double of 14 Points, 10 Rebounds for Doughty
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher allowed Penn St. Harrisburg to score just one point in the opening 4:32 and kept the Lady Lions from making their first shot from the field until another 1:23 had run off the clock as the Gophers cruised to a convincing 70-44 victory this afternoon in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
A 3-point basket by Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) with 13:15 left to play in the first half provided Goucher with its first double-digit lead at 13-3. Thanks to a layup by Stephanie Yetter and a successful mid-range jumper by Brittani Guerre, the Lady Lions (5-5) were able to close to within 13-7, but the Gophers (3-8) responded with a run of 11 consecutive points — ignited by another 3-pointer from Huff — that made the score 24-7 with 7:48 remaining before halftime.
After 20 minutes, head coach Didi Cotton's squad enjoyed a 15-point lead, 34-19.
Goucher's lead fluctuated between 14 and 28 points the entire second half.
Huff led all scorers as she supplied the Gophers with 18 points. Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) recorded a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while TaQuasia Lambert (Brooklyn, N.Y./Patapsco) came off the bench to contribute 10 points to the non-conference victory.
The Lady Lions, who came averaging 64.0 points per game, also boasted three double-figure scorers as Amanda Moyer knocked down 11 points and Daril Foose and Guerrre chipped in with 10 apiece.
This was the inaugural meeting between the two schools in the sport of women's basketball. The Lady Lions, who were playing for the first time since falling to Elizabethtown, 76-65, back on Dec. 11, are now 0-2 this season against teams from the Landmark Conference.
