Goodell Hits Back-to-Back Threes to Pad Gophers' Cushion
TOWSON, Md. — After Wesley pulled within four with 5:45 left in the game, a 13-0 run turned the Gophers' tenuous lead into a comfortable victory.
Despite having never taken a lead in the first half, Goucher (1-2) scored the last six points of the frame to head into intermission down by just three.
After a back-and-forth start to the second period, featuring six lead changes in the first eight minutes, the Gophers found themselves down 34-32 when TaQuasia Lambert (Brooklyn, N.Y./Patapsco (Md.)) hit a jump shot to level the score. Off of a defensive stop, Latifah Butler (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) made both attempts from the charity stripe, putting the Gophers ahead for good.
When Wesley (0-3) made a jumper to pull within 38-36, Jeannie Goodell (Alexandria, Va./The Peddie School (N.J.)) nailed back-to-back three-point baskets to extend the lead to eight. The Wolverines would never get within a single possession again.
The resilient visitors did pull within four with 5:45 remaining, but were held scoreless for the next 4:41 with the Gophers scoring 13 points over that span to put the game out of reach.
During that run, Butler had five of her team-high 16 points, 11 of which came in the second half. She also was the only Gopher with double-digit rebounds, pulling down 11.
Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Gophers.
Jazmine Miller, who came into the game averaging 21.5 points per contest, led all scorers with 17. Heather Fuller had 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as well for the Wolverines.
