The Landmark Conference is full of talented student-athletes and the "Friday Focus" is just one way fans can get to know them. This week the conference introduces Monique Welch (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin), a women's basketball player from Goucher.
Welch is a sophomore guard for the Gophers. A starter this season, she is averaging more than 25 minutes per game with 6.2 points per game. Welch scored a career-high 19 points earlier this season against Mary Baldwin College and tallied the game-winning basket against conference rival USMMA on Dec. 7.

Why did you choose to attend Goucher?
I loved the small size and private attention given by the professors. It is also close to home and has a strong communications program. I felt welcome every visit and I loved the basketball team.
What has been the greatest part of your experience as a college athlete so far?
Being selected to the All-Tournament Team in the McDaniel tip-off tournament
Who has been the most influential person to your athletic career? Why?
My pastor/mentor, and my parents because they push me to be better than I was yesterday each day, and they've always been really supportive. Also, they encourage and motivate me to never settle for anything less than great, and to give 100% effort in everything I do.
What do you like most about competing in the Landmark?
It's a challenge every game.
What is something most people do not know about you?
I've played the piano since I was four years old.
Who was your favorite athlete as a child and why?
Dwayne Wade because he is very quick, an aggressive basketball player, and he is very confident. He's very humble and resilient.
