NEWARK, N.J. - For the fifth straight game, senior Nailah Jones (Glenn Dale, Md./Parkdale) scored in double-figures, finishing with 10 points to lead the way, as the Goucher College women's basketball team dropped a 76-34 decision on the road at Rutgers-Newark on Sunday afternoon.
With the defeat, the Gophers fell to 0-5 overall, while Rutgers-Newark improved to 4-1 with the victory.
In the game, Goucher was able to stay in distance of Rutgers-Newark early, as they trailed by just a single point (6-5) after junior Nicole Wolard (Tampa, Fla./Wolard) knocked down a free throw with 6:50 to go in the first quarter. But, Rutgers-Newark ended the period strong, finishing on a 14-4 run to go up, 20-9, after one.
For Goucher in the second period, points were tough to come by, as Rutgers-Newark outscored the Gophers by a large margin (26-2) to open a 46-11 lead into intermission.
In the second half, however, Goucher had more of an output on the offensive end, scoring 15 points in the third quarter and eight more in the fourth to tally 23 points over the final 20 minutes of action.
Overall in the defeat, Jones went into double-figures again with her 10-point total, as she also pulled down three rebounds and posted two assists. Wolard finished the day with nine points and snatched a team-high seven rebounds, while freshman Mya Lewis (Owings Mills, Md./Newtown) ended with eight points.
The Goucher College women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Delaware Valley for their final non-conference match-up before Landmark Conference play begins next weekend. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
