WASHINGTON, D.C. – Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) notched a career-high 28 points including 21 points in the second half to power Goucher College past Gallaudet University 62-58 in the non-conference season opener for both teams on Monday.
After scoring seven points in the first half, McFadden shot 7-for-13 from the floor and 7 of 9 from behind the arc in the second half. She had 10 points in a 24-10 third quarter to erase a 27-19 deficit and turn it into a 43-37 lead. The sophomore then gave the Gophers the lead for good in the fourth quarter with the game tied at 54 on a layup and posted five of the final six points to seal the victory while notch her fourth 20-point game of her career.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) continued where she left off her Landmark Conference Rookie of Year campaign finishing her first game of her sophomore season with a career-high 27 points and her fifth 20-point performance of her career. The sophomore has scored double figures in 21 of her 25 career games in a Gopher uniform.
Goucher got off to a slow start and ended the first quarter trailing Gallaudet 14-7 with all seven points coming from Williams
The second quarter was a battle that the Bison outscored the Gophers by one point to go into the locker room with a 27-19 lead.
Goucher then scored 41 second half points behind 37 points from the sophomore duo of McFadden and Williams to earn its first win in a season opener since 2015-16.
Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) made her collegiate debut in the starting lineup while Claire Flynn (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Jauniece Blackmon (Norfolk, Va./Portsmouth) each made their collegiate debuts off the bench. Quarles finished with three points, 10 rebounds and five blocks while Flynn had one rebound.
Goucher returns to action at the Greg Richards Memorial Tournament on Friday. The Gophers open the tournament against host Alleghany College at 3 p.m.
