BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College fell to third-ranked University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference women's basketball opener on Saturday.
Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds to notch her second double-double in three games for the Gophers. The freshman is averaging 14.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in her first three career games at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. Her second double-double of the week comes on the heels of her career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds in her home debut against St. Mary's on Sunday.
Quarles, who is averaging 10.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, has four double-figure point games and three double-digit rebound contests this season. In addition, she has hauled in at least seven caroms in seven of the eight games she has played. The freshman added a career-best two assists and two steals on Saturday.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) added eight points, four rebounds and four steals. The sophomore needs three points against Salisbury on December 15 to reach 500 for her career. Williams has posted four steals in six contests and four assists in four tilts this season. She has eight career games with at least four assists and 16 games with at least four thefts.
Shelby Apostol (Oxnard, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) registered seven points and five rebounds for the Gophers. It was her fourth game this season with at least seven points while the five boards matched a season-high she also posted at Hood on November 19. For her career, she has scored at least seven points nine times and hauled in five rebounds or more three times.
The Royals used a 19-4 first quarter and a 19-11 second quarter to jump out to a 38-15 lead going into the locker room. Scranton then posted a 15-5 third frame and a 16-15 fourth quarter to earn a 69-35 win.
Goucher returns to action on Sunday, December 15 when the team concludes its four-game homestand against Salisbury. Game time is 2 p.m.
