COLUMBUS, OHIO – Despite Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) notching her 500th-career point and being selected to the Capital/Marriott Columbus Airport Holiday Tournament All-Tournament team, Goucher College lost to John Carroll in the second day of the tournament in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday.
After posting eight points and 10 rebounds against Capital on Saturday, McFadden narrowly missed a double-double for the second-straight day after finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. The sophomore hit a jumper with 3:39 left in the third quarter off a pass from Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) to join Williams in the 500-point club in their sophomore campaigns. McFadden reached the midpoint to 1,000 points in 36 games while Williams joined the club in 33 games on December 15.
McFadden reached double figures in points for the first time in five games while she has scored 10+ for the fifth time on the road, seventh time in 2019-20 and 24th time in her career. The sophomore also has seven tilts with nine or more rebounds this season.
Williams added 13 points, a season-high seven steals and two assists. The sophomore has scored double figures in three-straight games, nine times this season and in 29 of 35 games in her career. Williams has recorded at least seven thefts four times in her career and has 11 contests with at least five steals.
Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) stuffed the stat sheet with five points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks. It is the seventh time this season Quarles has hauled in eight caroms and the third time she has had three or more blocks. In addition, she tied her career high in steals for the third occasion and assists for the second time.
John Carroll outscored the Gophers 28-11, 16-7, 15-11 and 19-12 in the four quarters to earn a 78-41 win.
Goucher starts 2020 with its final non-conference game of the year at Stevenson University. Game time is 6 p.m.
