Gophers, Landmark Conference to Return to the Palestra

TOWSON, Md. - For the second straight season, a Goucher College basketball team will have the opportunity to play at the famed Palestra in Philadelphia.  

The Landmark Conference announced Wednesday that eight of its basketball teams will play at The Palestra on Sunday, January 14, 2024 in a quadruple-header of basketball featuring four men's and four women's teams.  The Gopher women's basketball team has been selected to play this season and will face Elizabethtown College at noon on that Sunday.

"It's an honor to be selected to play at the Palestra. I'm excited for the players to have the opportunity to compete at one of the most historic venues in college basketball," said Goucher first-year head coach Mike Ricks.

"It's really exciting to be able to play at a venue like the Palestra, especially as women," said Goucher junior guard Briyah Haggins.  "This program has been through a lot of adversity so to be able to showcase the talent that we have here on a stage like that is an honor and a blessing."

"Playing a full slate of Landmark Conference games at The Palestra is a unique and cherished opportunity for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff," stated Landmark Conference Commissioner Katie Boldvich. "This iconic venue isn't just a place to play; it's a place where we honor the tradition of college basketball and create our own memorable moments in the Landmark Conference's history."

Last season, Goucher's men's team had the opportunity to play at The Palestra, facing Catholic University.

Known as the "Cathedral of College Basketball," The Palestra opened its doors in 1927, making it the oldest major college arena still in use today. It has hosted more games, more visiting teams, and more NCAA tournaments than any other facility of its kind. It is the longtime home of the Philadelphia Big 5 Championship and also serves as the home court of the University of Pennsylvania.
