Gophers Extend Season-Opening Win Streak to Four, Whitaker Sets Free Throw Mark

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College women's basketball team improved to 4-0 with a 92-51 victory over Bryn Mawr College in the second round of the 2024 Renie Amoss Memorial Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. The Gophers are 4-0 for the first time since 2015-16.
- A three-pointer by Briyah Haggins with 4:10 left in the first quarter put the Gophers in front 17-7.
- The Gophers led Bryn Mawr (4-2) 24-11 after 10 minutes.
- The Owls cut the lead to nine, 24-15, two minutes into the second.
- A 9-0 Gopher run capped by a Sanai Knox layup made it 33-15 at the 5:45 mark.
- A Knox basket in the final seconds made it 40-23 at intermission.
- A 10-0 Goucher run made it 50-23 on two Amira Whitaker free throws with 6:31 on the clock.
- Merci Turner's three with five seconds left in the frame made it 73-45.
- Bryn Mawr scored the first five points of the quarter before a Nia Edens basket at the 7:17 mark.
- Turner hit another three in the final minute to account for the 92-51 final.
- Whitaker went 12-12 at the free throw line to set a program record for free throw percentage in a game en route to 17 points. She eclipsed the old record of 11-11 set by Shadae Swan against York on November 20, 2007.
- Whitaker also grabbed six rebounds.
- Knox went 6-12 from the floor and totaled 12 points while grabbing nine rebounds, all on the offensive end.
- Meona Boykin notched 11 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
- Turner and Lauryn Towns each contributed 10 points.
- Goucher shot 31% overall, 8-30 from three and 18-28 at the free throw line while outrebounding Bryn Mawr 60-59.
- The Gophers forced 54 Owl turnovers on the afternoon.
- Goucher opens Landmark Conference play Wednesday night, hosting Susquehanna at 7 pm at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
