River Hawks Strong Second Half Clinches Win Over Gophers

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Goucher College Gophers (12-8 Overall; 5-8 Conference) traveled to face the Susquehanna University River Hawks (11-9 Overall; 8-5 Conference). The game reamined close, consisting of five lead changes, and six ties, until the fourth quarter where the River Hawks pulled ahead to secure the 94-67 Landmark Conference win.
- Meona Boykin kicked off the scoring in the game, off the won tip off by Sanai Knox.
- A basket by Lauryn Towns quickly followed, giving the Gophers the early lead.
- The River Hawks went on an 11-4 run, before a made three-pointer by Amira Whitaker brought the game back within two.
- Points by Chi Igwe and Towns tied the game again with 3:36 remaining in the quarter.
- The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter, to end the first 21-18, Susquehannahanna lead.
- Whitaker began the scoring in the second quarter, with a three-pointer.
- Back-to-back plays by Boykin kept the Gophers within one point with 6:07 remaining in the quarter.
- The teams traded points, before Boykin retained the lead for Goucher with a made three pointer (3:24).
- Susquehanna quickly took the lead again, going on a seven point scoring run.
- The teams went into half with the River Hawks ahead 42-36.
- Susquehanna scored the first points of the half, which Merci Turner quickly responded after making both of her free throws.
- Whitaker added another three on the board for the Gophers just under two minutes into the half, bringing the score to 46-42.
- Baskets by Nia George and Key Vaselaros ended a 10-1 run by the River Hawks.
- Boykin scored six of the final eight points for Goucher, while Towns had the other two points.
- Susquehanna ended the quarter up 67-55.
- The River Hawks scored the first six points of the quarter, which was ended by a made basket from Maiya Villanueva
- Susquehanna responded with another eight point run which was broken by a pair of made free throws by Turner.
- Leila Townsend ended the scoring for the Gophers in the contest with a three-pointer from Whitaker.
- Boykin led Goucher with 25 points on the night, she led the team with 7 rebounds and three steals.
- Whitaker also recorded double digits in the game, with 13. She added five rebounds and a steal as well.
- Susquehanna outrebounded Goucher 74-41. They also recorded 18 points off the 18 turovers. The Gophers recorded 11 points from the 22 River Hawk turovers.
- Susquehanna shot 45.3% in the game, going 0-15 from beyond the arc, and finishing 16-28 free throws.
- Goucher shot 28.9% in the contest, going 5-30 from the three-point arc, and went 14-23 from the charity stripe.
- The women return home the face the Warriors of Lycoming College in the first game of our double header on Saturday, February 8th set to tip off at 2pm at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
