Gophers Power Past Penn St.-Berk in Second Tournament Win
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (3-0 overall) took down the Nittany Lions of Penn State–Berks (0-5 overall) on day two of the Renie Amoss Tournament, in a 61-46 win, as the Gophers secured their second win of the tournament weekend.
Goucher opened the game with a three-pointer from Leila Townsend, before Penn State–Berks answered with seven straight to take a 7-3 lead. After a two-minute scoring drought on both sides, Nia Edens broke the stalemate with a layup. Despite this, Penn State continued to hold the momentum, pushing ahead 11–6 with 2:17 remaining. The quarter closed with the Gophers trailing 13–6 after a defensive first quarter.
The Gophers flipped the script to begin the second. Savannah Holmes knocked down a three-pointer in the opening minute, followed by another triple from Edens and a layup from Chyanne Harris to put the Gophers ahead 16–14. The teams traded baskets in a tight stretch that saw Penn State tie the game at 19–19. Goucher regained control with an Edens three-pointer and a jumper from Sanai Knox, while Townsend added two late buckets to send the Gophers into halftime with a 29–21 lead.
Defense dominated the early moments of the third quarter until a block from Knox sparked an Edens rebound and a three-pointer by Holmes. Free throws from Aniya McDaniel extended Goucher's lead to 36–21 with 6:36 remaining. After a Penn State timeout, the Gophers stayed in control with baskets from Logan Davis and McDaniel, followed by another deep basket from Holmes. McDaniel added four more points late in the quarter, and Davis finished it off with another layup as Goucher entered the fourth leading 52–25.
Penn State opened the final quarter with a 6-0 run before Darby Sherman answered with a three-pointer at the 5:30 mark. The Nittany Lions continued to chip away, scoring nine more points, but Knox stopped the surge with a putback layup off her own offensive rebound with 2:07 left. Penn State added one final basket, but the Gophers maintained control throughout the closing minutes to secure a 61–46 victory.
