Gophers Outshoot Catholic From Deep but Fall 72-50

BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher Gophers (3–1, 0–1 Landmark) hit the road for their first conference contest of the season, facing the Catholic University Cardinals (2–2, 1–0 Landmark). A strong second half performance helped Catholic secure a 72–50 win.
Catholic opened on a six-point run before Leila Townsend answered with back-to-back threes to put Goucher on the board. After a brief scoring drought, Logan Davis added a layup, but the Cardinals extended their lead to 16–8. Momentum picked up when Savannah Holmes scored on a layup and a three-pointer, sparking a run that put the Gophers behind by three points, 13-16 with four minutes remaining in the quarter. Davis added another two-pointer to keep the Gophers close, but Catholic reclaimed control and held a 19–15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Goucher struck early in the second with a three from Aniya McDaniel less than a minute into the quarter, followed by a three from Lauryn Towns to bring the Gophers within three. Shortly after, McDaniel added a pair of layups to bring the score to 30–25, before both defenses locked in, holding each other scoreless for nearly three minutes. Catholic closed the half strong and entered the break ahead 38–25.
Sanai Knox opened the third quarter with two early baskets, but Catholic responded with a dominant stretch to push the lead to 50–30. Nia George contributed at the line, while McDaniel added five more points, yet the Cardinals maintained control and led 57–40 heading into the fourth.
Catholic struck quickly again to start the final quarter. Holmes answered with a three and a layup, and Davis added points at the line, but Goucher struggled to cut into the deficit. Towns added three points late, drawing the foul after and finishing the and one, but the Cardinals held their lead throughout to close out the 72–50 victory.
McDaniel paced the Gophers with 12 points, followed by Holmes with 11. Davis led on the boards with 10 rebounds.
Goucher shot 29% in the game, compared to Catholics 34.7%. The Cardinals outshot the Gophers from the free-throw line, going 20-26, while Goucher shot 8-14. The Gophers found more success from beyond the arc, shooting 23.1% while the Cardinals shot 8.3%.
Catholic outrebounded Goucher 56-39, and earned 18 points off the 23 Gopher turnovers; meanwhile, Goucher was only able to add five points off the 13 Cardinal turnovers.
Goucher continues Landmark Conference play on the road at Scranton on Saturday, November 22, at 4pm. The Gophers return home on December 3 to take on Lycoming at 7pm.
