Townsend and McDaniel Led Goucher Offense at Moravian
BETHLEHEM, PA - The Goucher College Gophers (5-9 overall, 1-6 Landmark) hit the road to compete against the Greyhounds of Moravian University (5-9 overall, 3-4 Landmark). The Gophers kept the score tight in the opening quarter, but Moravian maintained its momentum over the remaining three quarters to secure a 68-57 victory.
The Gophers opened the scoring with a layup by Leila Townsend. Goucher continued to build early momentum as Sanai Knox added a layup and Townsend knocked down a 3-point jumper, giving the Gophers a 7-2 lead. Both teams settled into strong defensive play before Lauryn Towns added to Goucher's total. The Greyhounds chipped away at the deficit and pulled within one with 2:48 remaining in the quarter. A basket from Aniya McDaniel kept Goucher in front, 13-10, but Moravian took the lead with 1:50 remaining and carried a 17-13 advantage into the second quarter.
Moravian scored first in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Townsend made a free throw before the Greyhounds extended their lead to 23-14. Nia Edens connected on a jumper with 6:35 remaining in the half, but Moravian responded with a 13-point scoring run. Towns ended the run with a 3-pointer, and McDaniel followed with two quick baskets to keep the Gophers within reach. Logan Davis scored her first points of the game with 1:20 on the clock, and McDaniel capped the half with a 3-pointer as Goucher trailed 44-30 at the break.
The third quarter opened with a scoring stalemate before Moravian broke through at the 8:42 mark. Goucher answered quickly with a 3-pointer from Nia George. McDaniel and Davis each converted free throws, but the Greyhounds added five points to stretch their lead. A two-minute scoring drought ended with an Edens layup, though Moravian closed the quarter ahead 58-41.
The Greyhounds opened the fourth-quarter scoring before Knox added a layup for the Gophers. After a brief defensive battle, Townsend finished inside, and Towns followed with another basket to add to the Goucher total. A 3-pointer by Townsend cut into the Moravian lead, but the Greyhounds made key free throws with 3:33 remaining to maintain control. Edens and Knox each added layups in the final two minutes, but Moravian held on for the 68-57 win.
McDaniel led the Gophers with 15 points, followed by Townsend with 13. Knox paced Goucher on the glass with 10 rebounds.
The Greyhounds held the advantage statistically. Goucher shot 30.2% from the field compared to Moravian's 39.3%. The Greyhounds went 18-26 from the free throw line, while the Gophers finished 13-20. Goucher shot 40% from beyond the arc, compared to Moravian's 60%. Moravian outrebounded the Gophers 47-39.
The Gophers returned home to face Wilkes in a conference matchup on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 4 pm in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
