Goucher Battles Wilkes in Defensive Conference Contest
BALTIMORE, MD - Goucher (5-10 overall, 1-7 Landmark) hosted the Colonels of Wilkes University (4-11 overall, 1-7 Landmark) in a Landmark Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The game opened as a defensive battle before a strong finish by the Colonels resulted in a 51-45 win over the Gophers.
The contest began scoreless as both teams applied defensive pressure early. Lauryn Towns broke the scoring stalemate with a jump shot with 6:19 left in the first quarter. Wilkes answered quickly with a basket, prompting a Goucher timeout. Sanai Knox came out of the break with a layup, and the teams traded scores throughout the remainder of the quarter. Wilkes held a slim 9-6 advantage with 3:13 remaining before Logan Davis converted two layups for the Gophers. A Wilkes 3-pointer closed the quarter, giving the Colonels a 14-10 lead.
Wilkes opened the second quarter with a free throw and a layup to extend its advantage. After a four-and-a-half-minute scoring drought, Aniya McDaniel ended the dry spell with a jump shot for Goucher. Wilkes continued to build its lead and went ahead 25-12 with four minutes remaining in the half. Nia Edens knocked down a 3-pointer late in the quarter, sending the Gophers into halftime trailing 29-15.
Chyanne Harris opened the scoring in the third quarter for Goucher. After several minutes of strong defensive play from both sides, Wilkes connected on a 3-pointer. Davis followed by going to the line with 3:08 remaining and converting both free throws. Goucher gained momentum behind an Edens 3-pointer and a layup, while McDaniel added points from the free-throw line. Wilkes maintained control heading into the fourth quarter with a 36-27 lead.
Edens scored in the opening minute of the final quarter as Goucher mounted a comeback. The Gophers put together a six-point scoring run, cutting the Wilkes lead to three. Following a timeout, Davis finished a layup, and McDaniel later added a 3-pointer to keep Goucher within striking distance. Wilkes sealed the game at the free-throw line in the final minutes, holding off the late rally to secure the 51-45 victory.
McDaniel led the Gophers with 16 points, followed by Edens with 13. Harris paced Goucher defensively with four steals, while Knox and Davis each pulled down 10 rebounds.
Wlkes held the advantage statistically. Shooting 36.2% from the field, compared to Goucher, which shot 29%. From the free-throw line, the Colonels converted 12 of 17 attempts, while the Gophers went 5 for 15. From the 3-point range, Goucher shot 20% compared to Wilkes' 21.7%. The Colonels outrebounded the Gophers 47-39.
The Gophers will return to action on Jan. 21 when they host Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
