Goucher Women’s Basketball Fall to Catholic in Landmark Match-Up
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (5-13 overall, 1-10 Landmark) hosted the Cardinals of The Catholic University of America (12-5 overall, 9-1 Landmark) in a Landmark Conference match-up on Wednesday evening. The Gophers showed early energy but were unable to keep pace with Catholic's scoring, falling 94–42.
Catholic scored first, with a 3-pointer in the opening 30 seconds of the game. Aniya McDaniel responded with a layup for the Gophers. Goucher kept early momentum as Logan Davis finished a layup assisted by Leila Townsend. The Cardinals answered to regain a 5–4 edge before going on a 10-point scoring run to take a 15–6 lead. McDaniel added to the Gopher total, including a 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining in the quarter. Catholic closed out the period with a basket and took a 24–11 lead heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter opened as a defensive battle. Catholic broke the scoring drought at the free-throw line with 7:52 remaining in the half. A steal by Nia George led to a Sanai Knox layup, while Davis and McDaniel added points for the Gophers. Despite the effort, the Cardinals maintained control and knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:44 remaining. Davis capped the half with a jump shot, but Catholic carried a 45–20 advantage into halftime.
The Cardinals scored first out of the break with a layup, but Davis answered with one of her own for the Gophers. Catholic went on a seven-point run before Knox halted the momentum. Goucher added layups from Davis and Nia Edens, but the Cardinals responded with another scoring surge. Davis continued to contribute offensively, as Catholic extended its lead to 78–30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Edens opened the final quarter with a layup off a steal, and Catholic responded with a basket of its own. McDaniel added three points, followed by another Edens layup. After a brief scoring drought, the Cardinals resumed scoring. Davis converted both free throws at the line, while Catholic added a 3-pointer with 4:23 remaining. Knox checked back in and scored on a layup before the Cardinals closed out the contest with a final basket and secured a 94–42 victory.
Davis and McDaniel led the Gophers in scoring with 14 points each. Chyanne Harris recorded a team-high three steals and three assists, while Davis also led Goucher in rebounds with 13.
Catholic held the statistical advantage, shooting 52.3% from the field compared to Goucher's 26.6%. From beyond the arc, the Gophers went 1-for-15, while the Cardinals connected on 15-of-31 attempts. At the free-throw line, Goucher shot 33.3%, compared to Catholic's 55%.
Goucher is scheduled to return to action on the road against Elizabethtown on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 4 pm. The Gophers are set to return home to host Drew on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 4 pm.
