Gophers Battle Through Road Conference Test at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA- The Goucher Gophers (5-14 overall, 1-11 Landmark) traveled to Elizabethtown College to face the Blue Jays (13-6 overall, 9-3 Landmark) in a Landmark Conference road contest. Goucher competed through a challenging matchup and found early scoring opportunities despite facing one of the league's top teams. Ultimately, the Blue Jays maintained their lead through the game, clinching a 89-43 win over the Gophers.
Elizabethtown opened the game with a 9-0 scoring run. Leila Townsend stopped the Blue Jay run with a layup. Savannah Holmes followed by securing an offensive rebound and converting a putback layup. Elizabethtown continued to build momentum with a seven-point run that was halted by a layup from Chyanne Harris. With 2:35 remaining in the quarter, Lauryn Towns added another basket for Goucher. Nia Edens scored in the final minute of the period. The Blue Jays took a 31-10 lead into the second quarter.
Townsend scored in the opening minute of the second quarter before both teams went on a minute-and-a-half scoring drought. Elizabethtown broke the stalemate at the free-throw line. Edens answered by converting a free throw for the Gophers. Elizabethtown continued to limit the Goucher offense and extended its lead to 43-13 before Townsend made another layup. Towns added a free throw with 3:18 remaining in the half. Edens scored four more points to close the half, and Towns converted two free throws as the Blue Jays carried a 48-22 lead into halftime.
The Blue Jays scored early, coming out of the break, before Aniya McDaniel responded with a layup for Goucher. Townsend knocked down a jump shot, followed by a five-point response from Elizabethtown. McDaniel and Edens each added layups for the Gophers. With 3:13 remaining in the third quarter, Towns connected on a 3-point shot. Logan Davis and Edens scored the remaining Goucher points in the period as Elizabethtown led 75-38 entering the final quarter.
Elizabethtown scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter. Harris went to the line and converted both free throws for Goucher. With 5:18 remaining, the Blue Jays scored on a jump shot before Holmes made a free throw. After a brief defensive stretch, Elizabethtown added four more points. Sanai Knox closed the scoring by making both free throws in the final seconds as the Blue Jays secured an 89-43 victory.
Edens led the Gophers with 12 points. Towns and Townsend tied for second on the team with eight points each. Edens also led Goucher in steals with five, while Knox grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Goucher shot 28.6% from the field against Elizabethtown's 59.7%. From the free-throw line, the Gophers went 10-18, while the Blue Jays finished 9-14. From beyond the arc, Goucher shot 7.7% compared to Elizabethtown's 42.9%.
The Gophers are set to return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 4, with a 7 p.m. road matchup at Lycoming. Goucher is also scheduled to return home on Saturday, Feb. 7, to face Drew at 4 p.m.
