Gophers Rally After Halftime to Top Lycoming, 67-62
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Goucher Gophers (6-14 overall, 2-11 Landmark) traveled to face the Warriors of Lycoming (7-13 overall, 3-10 Landmark) in a Landmark Conference matchup. Goucher controlled the opening quarter before Lycoming rallied prior to halftime to take a narrow lead. Coming out of the break, the Gophers regained momentum and held on down the stretch to secure a 67-62 victory, marking their second conference win of the season.
Leila Townsend recorded the Gophers' first basket of the night in the first minute of play. Goucher built early momentum behind a Logan Davis layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Nia George. After a brief defensive stretch, Aniya McDaniel broke the stalemate with a jump shot. George later connected on another three, to give the Gophers a 12-5 lead with 4:46 remaining in the quarter. Following a three-minute scoring drought, Sanai Knox added a two-point basket. Lycoming rounded out the scoring in the first, but Goucher carried a 14-10 advantage into the second quarter.
Lycoming opened the second quarter with the first four points before Davis converted a free throw. George knocked down another shot from beyond the arc, though the Warriors took a 19-18 lead with 5:01 remaining in the half. Goucher responded as McDaniel drained a 3-pointer to regain the lead. The game stayed tight, with Lycoming tying it at 21-21. Savannah Holmes and Nia Edens added baskets to push Goucher back in front, but Lycoming closed the half on a run to take a 30-26 lead into halftime.
After the break, both teams battled defensively before Davis scored from the free throw line. With 5:33 remaining in the third quarter, McDaniel hit a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead for the Gophers. Davis contributed seven points in the period, and baskets from Townsend and Chyanne Harris in the final minute helped Goucher take a 42-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Edens scored the first three points of the final quarter, and Townsend followed by converting both free throws. With 7:47 remaining, Lycoming cut the deficit to seven. Edens answered with a 3-pointer, and Harris added a layup off a steal to extend the lead. McDaniel then converted both free throws to give Goucher a 54-40 advantage. Lycoming responded with a five-point run, but Edens halted the momentum with another 3-pointer. The Warriors continued to chip away, adding six more points. In the final three minutes, Edens and McDaniel connected on key shots, while George, McDaniel, and Knox combined at the free-throw line to seal the 67-62 win.
McDaniel led the Gophers with 15 points, followed closely by Edens with 14. Davis and George also finished in double figures. George led the team with four steals, while Davis paced the Gophers on the boards with 12 rebounds.
Goucher shot 35.1% from the field compared to Lycoming's 32.7%. The Warriors held the edge at the free-throw line, going 22-30 to the Gophers' 19-37. From beyond the arc, Goucher outshot Lycoming 38.1% to 25%.
The Gophers are set to return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7, hosting Drew University for the Kya Taylor Memorial Game. Tip-off was scheduled for 4 p.m.
