Gophers Hold Off Late Rally to Defeat Drew, 56-54
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (7-14 overall, 3-11 Landmark) hosted the Rangers of Drew University (11-9 overall, 7-7 Landmark) in a conference thriller. The Rangers took an early first-quarter lead before the Gophers found their rhythm and controlled most of the contest. A late surge by Drew put the Gopher victory in jeopardy, but Goucher regained control in the final moments to secure a 56-54 win. The victory marked the Gophers' second consecutive conference win.
The Gophers were the first to score, opening the game with a free throw from Leila Townsend, before Drew responded quickly with a layup in the opening minute. Logan Davis added a layup before the Rangers went on an eight-point run. Aniya McDaniel stopped the run with a 3-pointer, and Drew later ended a two-minute scoring drought from the free-throw line. Goucher answered with a 3-pointer from Nia Edens as the quarter remained tight. Drew held a 13-9 lead with 1:42 remaining before Townsend knocked down a three. The Rangers closed the quarter and took a 16-12 lead into the second.
Drew opened the second quarter with a basket from beyond the arc. McDaniel added three points before Davis converted both of her free throws. McDaniel followed with a layup to tie the game and spark the Gopher offense. Townsend gave Goucher its first lead at 21-19 with a layup at the 6:12 mark. Edens made a free throw before a brief defensive stretch. Nia George added two points from the line, and Chyanne Harris made a free throw to add to the Gophers total. McDaniel closed the half with four points as Goucher built momentum, taking the 29-21 lead into halftime.
The Gophers opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers from McDaniel and George. Drew responded with three points, but Savannah Holmes answered with a 3-pointer for the Gophers. The Rangers went on an eight-point run before Sanai Knox halted the momentum with a layup. Edens connected from beyond the arc to put Goucher ahead 43-32 with 1:30 remaining in the quarter. Drew added late points, but the Gophers maintained a narrow 43-38 lead heading into the fourth.
Davis opened the final quarter by converting both free throws before Drew answered with a 3-pointer. Another three brought the Rangers within one, and Drew later took a 47-45 lead with a jump shot. McDaniel responded with a 3-pointer to keep the Gophers within striking distance. After Drew added another basket, Edens and Lauryn Towns scored back-to-back layups to reclaim the lead 52-51, with 51 seconds remaining. Edens converted two free throws to extend the lead to 56-51. Drew knocked down a late 3-pointer with four seconds left, but Goucher held on in the closing moments to secure the 56-54 victory.
McDaniel led the team with 18 points, followed closely by Edens with 13. George paced the Gophers with five steals and 12 rebounds.
Goucher shot 32.7% from the field compared to Drew's 29.3%. The Rangers held the advantage at the free-throw line, shooting 14-21, while the Gophers went 14-22. From beyond the arc, Goucher outperformed Drew, shooting 29.6% compared to 21.4%. The tight contest consisted of 12 lead changes and two ties.
The Gophers returned to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11, when they host Moravian in a 7pm tip-off at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
