Goucher Stays Within Striking Distance Against Greyhounds
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (7-15 overall; 3-12 conference) competed in a home conference matchup against the Greyhounds of Moravian University (8-14 overall; 6-9 conference), staying within striking distance before a late Moravian push secured a 60–55 win.
Goucher opened the scoring with free throws from Savannah Holmes. Moravian responded with a nine-point run to take a 9–2 lead with 6:40 remaining in the first quarter. Sanai Knox halted the Greyhounds' momentum with a jump shot, but Moravian continued to control the period, extending its lead to 18–4, before Nia Edens added a late basket to close the quarter.
Moravian began the second quarter with a pair of converted free throws. Lauryn Towns knocked down a 3-pointer before Chyanne Harris added a free throw. The Gophers gained traction with a layup from Leila Townsend and another 3-pointer from Towns. Moravian answered from beyond the arc with 6:09 remaining in the half. Edens added five points for Goucher, while Towns and Edens continued to chip away at the deficit. Holmes and Edens converted from the free-throw line late in the quarter, but Moravian maintained a 33–29 lead heading into halftime.
Both teams battled defensively to open the third quarter before Logan Davis broke the scoring stalemate with a layup for Goucher. Aniya McDaniel connected on a 3-pointer to pull the Gophers within one. After a scoreless stretch of nearly two minutes, Moravian broke through before Davis answered with another layup. A six-point Moravian run was stopped by a Davis basket, followed quickly by a two-pointer from Edens. Edens and Knox accounted for Goucher's final points of the quarter as the Greyhounds carried a 50–44 lead into the fourth.
The opening minute of the final quarter went scoreless before McDaniel hit a jump shot, followed by a Moravian layup. The Greyhounds added four more points before Nia George and Townsend scored for Goucher. Towns converted at the free-throw line, and Edens added a layup, but Moravian closed out the game at the stripe to secure a 60–55 victory.
Edens led the Gophers with 20 points, followed by Towns with 10. Edens also paced the team in rebounds and tied for the team lead in steals with three, alongside Towns.
Moravian held the statistical advantage, shooting 40.3% from the field compared to Goucher's 26.8%. The Gophers went 4-25 from 3-point range, while the Greyhounds shot 3-12. Moravian also held a slight edge at the free-throw line, shooting 70% compared to Goucher's 65%.
The Gophers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they host Juniata at 4pm, where they will be honoring the seniors prior to the matchup.
