Gophers Celebrate Senior Day Against Juniata
BALTIMORE, MD- Senior Day set the stage as the Goucher College Gophers (7-16 overall, 3-13 Landmark) hosted the Eagles of Juniata College (5-18 overall, 3-13 Landmark) in a Landmark Conference match-up. Playing in front of a home crowd celebrating the program's seniors, Goucher battled through runs and responded with key plays in a tightly contested matchup, but ultimately fell 70-65.
Juniata opened the game with the first five points before Leila Townsend answered with four straight for Goucher. The Gophers gained control behind a Lauryn Towns layup, followed by baskets from Nia Edens and a 3-pointer from Aniya McDaniel. Late free throws brought the Eagles within three, but a Logan Davis layup in the final minute helped Goucher carry a 16–11 lead into the second quarter.
Scoring resumed at the free-throw line with Towns converting before McDaniel knocked down another three. Davis added a layup and Edens hit both free throws to push the Gophers ahead 24–15 with 6:04 remaining in the half. Juniata responded with a seven-point run to cut the deficit to two, then took a 27–26 lead after Towns added two more from the line. The Eagles closed the half strong, extending their lead to 33–28 at halftime.
Juniata carried its momentum into the third quarter, opening with four quick points. Sanai Knox scored twice to keep the Gophers within reach, but an 11-point Eagles run widened the gap. Davis stopped the surge with a layup, and McDaniel added four points to keep Goucher within striking distance. Juniata held a 53–42 advantage heading into the final period.
The Eagles controlled the early minutes of the fourth quarter, but McDaniel sparked a response with a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper. Townsend and Davis added layups, and Townsend followed with a three to trim the deficit. After a brief scoring drought, Davis broke through at the line, and Edens contributed five points to pull Goucher within six. Despite a late layup from Knox out of a timeout, Juniata sealed the game with a final basket, earning a 70–65 victory.
McDaniel led the Gophers with 19 points, followed by Edens with 15. Towns and Nia George each recorded three steals, while Davis led the team with eight rebounds.
The Gophers return to action on the road against Susquehanna University on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7pm, beginning a two-game road stretch to close the season.
