Gophers Finish Season with 67-51 Victory Over Wilkes
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Goucher College Gophers (8-17 overall, 4-14 Landmark) closed out the 2025–26 campaign on the road, traveling to face the Colonels of Wilkes University (5-20 overall, 2-16 Landmark) in their final contest of the season. The Gophers held a commanding lead throughout the match-up, securing a 67-51 win.
Wilkes opened the scoring at the free-throw line before the Gophers answered with Lauryn Towns converting both of her attempts. After a defensive stretch from both sides, Leila Townsend broke through with a jump shot. With 6:10 remaining in the first quarter, Sanai Knox added a bucket as Goucher built momentum. The Gophers extended their lead to 11–4 behind baskets from Logan Davis and Nia Edens, before Wilkes responded with four points. Goucher continued to press, as Chyanne Harris and Edens scored on back-to-back layups. Free throws from Davis and Savannah Holmes added to the Gopher tally, and a Davis layup in the final 15 seconds sent the Gophers into the second quarter with a 21–8 lead.
Goucher struck first in the second quarter with a layup from Davis, though Wilkes responded with a 3-pointer. Holmes followed with a layup to push the lead to 26–12. Edens grabbed a defensive rebound and assisted on a Davis basket, prompting Wilkes to take a timeout. Wilkes found brief success with consecutive scores, but Edens halted the run with a 3-pointer. Knox and Nia George each added two points as the Gophers maintained control. In the final minute of the half, a Towns layup and a George free throw capped the scoring, sending Goucher into halftime ahead 39–24.
Coming out of the half, the Gophers struck first with a Townsend layup. George followed with a steal and kick-out to Townsend, who drained a 3-pointer. Wilkes responded at the free-throw line, converting both attempts. Edens answered from beyond the arc for Goucher, and Harris finished a layup off an assist from Knox. The Colonels remained steady at the line with another pair of free throws. In the final minute of the quarter, Townsend and Knox closed out the scoring as Goucher maintained a 53–37 advantage heading into the fourth.
Goucher opened the fourth quarter with a Townsend 3-pointer. The teams traded baskets before the Colonels connected from the free-throw line. Holmes added another layup for the Gophers, followed by Edens converting at the line. Edens proceeded to finish a layup to extend the lead, prompting Wilkes to take another timeout. The Colonels answered with a five-point run, but Townsend stopped the momentum with free throws. In the final minute, Townsend knocked down a 3-pointer and converted two more from the line as Goucher controlled the fourth quarter and secured a 67–51 victory.
Townsend led the Gophers with 18 points, followed by Edens with 15 and Davis with 11. Edens paced Goucher defensively with six steals, while George added four. George also led the team on the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds.
The Gophers held the edge in shooting, connecting on 34.8 percent from the field compared to 24.2 percent for the Wilkes Colonels. Wilkes found success at the free-throw line, shooting 17-25, while Goucher went 16-27. From beyond the arc, the Gophers shot 22.7 percent, compared to Wilkes' 16.7 percent.
The win closes out the 2025–26 season for the Goucher Women's Basketball team, who will return to action in late 2026.
