PHOENIX, Md. – Christina Pevey (Post, Texas/Post) finished tied for the low score of the tournament to pace Goucher College women's golf to a second-place finish at the Goucher Spring Invitational on Monday.
The start of the second round was moved up to 8:30 a.m. to try to avoid the winds, but the weather decided to come early and teams played through a heavy wind throughout the final round.
Pevey came into the final round with a three-stroke lead after shooting an 82 on Sunday. She then shot a 94 in the heavy wind while Tess Murphy shot an 85 and 91 in the two round for the two players to finish in a tie for the top spot. The tiebreaker came down to the two players scores on the back nine in the final round and Murphy bested Pevey by two strokes to earn medialist honors.
Emmie Starchvick (Jacksonville, Ore./South Medford) was one of two Gophers to improve on her score in the second round despite the weather. Starchvick posted a 90 on the first day and an 89 in the second round to finish three strokes behind the low score with a two-round score of 179.
Lauren O'Leary (Potomac, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and Danielle Pena (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) also finished in the Top-10. O'Leary (195) played as an individual and placed seventh while Pena (197) was ninth. Emily Pochet (12th place, 217) and Kianna Haskin (Waitsfield, Vt./Harwood Union) (13th place, 233) round out the Goucher team players.
Catholic won the two-day event with a score of 735, 34 strokes ahead of Goucher. The Gophers shot 378 in the first round and a 391 in the final round for a two-round score of 769. Sweet Briar (914) rounded out the three-team field.
Goucher will now have two weeks to prepare for the Landmark Conference Championships at the Fox Hollow Golf Club in Branchburg, N.J., on April 27-28.
