Knitter Produces Seven Goals, Picks Up Pair of AssistsMarch 13, 2008
BALTIMORE, Md. - When Goucher ranked first among Division III teams in scoring offense back in 2001, the Gophers averaged exactly 17.0 goals per game.
Today, 17 goals wasn't enough to guarantee head coach Katie Trainor's squad a victory over Notre Dame (Md.). Instead, the Gophers allowed a six-goal advantage early in the second half to evaporate and they were handed an 18-17 setback by the Gators.
Despite being out-shot, 17-16, by the Gators (1-2) in the first half, the Gophers led 11-6 after 30 minutes. Kate Knitter (Sellerville, PA/Pennridge) had a hand in seven of the 11 goals, scoring five times and picking up assists on goals by Colleen Cole (Holliston, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon School) and Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, VA/Rockbridge County).
Knitter added two more goals in the second half to complete a seven-goal, two-assist performance.
The Gators didn't catch the Gophers (1-3) until a goal by Tina Money with 9:16 left to play created a 15-15 tie. Goucher went back ahead 16-15 on a goal by Sandy Okun (Stevenson, MD/McDonogh School) with 8:30 remaining.
Lauren Terry's goal at 52:11 tied the score at 16-all and Money's unassisted goal with 5:46 showing on the clock put Notre Dame ahead for the first time since 2-1.
An unassisted goal by Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County) with 2:48 left to play knotted the score up at 17-17, but the Gators were awarded a free-position shot with :50 remaining, which Money turned into the game-winning goal.
The Gators enjoyed a 29-14 edge in shots during the second half.
